Abstract

For many adolescents the transition from school to the professional world is often accompanied with problems and fears that befall adolescents when they are not prepared for it. These problems result from different circumstances. Often pupils do not know what they have to expect when they are employed and what will be demanded of them. They do not know the structures of their new environment and they do not know where to get necessary information. For that reason the German ministry for education and research and the federation of German trade unions initiated and sponsor a program for 15 and 16 year old pupils. This program aims to prepare pupils to cope better with the transition to the professional world. The program is organized by an internet platform where teachers and pupils can download all materials for different themes and projects. The Institute for School Development Research in Dortmund (Germany) was charged with the evaluation of this internet based school project. The aim of this evaluation is to examine the efficacy of the program. Are pupils better prepared and do they know more details about the professional world than pupils who did not take part in this project? How do teachers and pupils get along with the multimedia learning environment? For the evaluation we designed a longitudinal study with control groups. The two points of measurement were set before the start of the program in the classes and at the end (after 1,5 years). For these quantitative measurements we developed a questionnaire for assessing different constructs such as 'knowledge about the world of employment', 'media competence', 'self-efficacy', 'social skills' etc. This quantitative part of the evaluation was combined with a qualitative one. In the middle of the program we interviewed teachers and pupils of the participating classes. The interviews were semi-standardized and aimed to examine the practicability of the internet based program as well as the question whether the program could be integrated in the lessons in a satisfying way. The results of the first measurement showed that 14year old pupils already know many things about the world of employment and that they occupy with their future. From 34 tasks dealing with problems and situations of being employed they were able to solve 30%. We found similar results in regard to media competence. In some of the examined areas we found differences between boys and girls. There were no differences between the treatment and the control group. The qualitative interviews showed that the practicability of the program was not always so easily. Many teachers did not have enough time to realize all the projects the way it was planned by the organizers. Additionally there were technical problems or other media-related problems. In our presentation we will give summary of the evaluation study. Especially we will report the results of the second measurement that will take place in summer 2004.
