Evaluating Opportunity Provider Visits

introducing some tools and tips for evaluating your visit effectiveness, including links to explore and/or download some useful pro-formas for structuring an evaluation

How can I evaluate my effectiveness in Opportunity Provider Visits?

First - find a friend!

Don't try and do everything on your own. Your process of evaluating how effective you are in working with employers will be much more fun and much more likely if you can find someone to talk things through with. So, as your starting point, find a friend!

Ideally this will be a colleague or mentor who is willing to act as a 'critical friend'. You need to feel comfortable talking openly to this person, and you might need to agree some ground rules for giving feedback. Perhaps you can provide each other with some mutual peer support and after discussing approaches accompany each other on some employer visits too. That way you can observe each other in action and provide mutual constructive feedback on how you get on.

You may well find you learn just as much from watching someone else carry out a visit as you do from practising visits yourself.

Secondly - have a look at this evaluation grid together - it offers a possible approach to conducting opportunity provider visits.

How do I use the evaluation grid?

Getting some constructive feedback
This grid is designed to act as a discussion document – you can either sit down with a colleague/ mentor/ critical friend and discuss the different headings, or if you like, you can print it out and get your colleague to come with you and use it as a sort of check list to provide a framework to give you some constructive feedback on how effective you are when visiting employers. Ideally it will stimulate some discussion that might lead to some formative feedback which could help you in your professional development.
Health Warning!
This form is only a guideline. It is not intended to be exhaustive or comprehensive. It should be viewed as a sensible framework that will prompt some useful discussion. It is likely to be most useful if used flexibly. Not all points will be appropriate in all situations, and there may be other issues you need to address. Remember too, this evaluation pro-forma relates only to one aspect of working with opportunity providers.

Our employer-visit evaluation grid is available in several forms - as a downloadable pro-forma for filling in your own evaluations (in full and pared-down forms), and in a browsable version with notes to explain each part of the pro-forma. You will find links to each of these versions below:
