Introduction

LMI Matters!

It's been said that...

When someone receives good labour market information that leads to a good decision, it benefits the individual, the employer and the economy.
From DfES (2004) LMI Matters! Understanding labour market information, DfES, Nottingham, p.2

Whilst clearly careers guidance is about a lot more than 'just' providing labour market information, insider knowledge about the labour market is one of the aspects of career guidance that users find of most value1. Anyone directly involved in delivering information, advice and guidance concerning career will no doubt be able to think of a number of recent examples of how they use LMI in their work. The interesting thing is that often the information is in itself not all that helpful. Raw data and facts need to be applied to individuals' particular situations to be of use. When talking about LMI perhaps it is more helpful to think in terms of labour market information's more useful sister labour market intelligence.

This section of the LMI Learning module is concerned with the Nature of LMI and its role in career guidance, it's a good place to start to give some context to working with LMI!

The Nature of LMI and its role in Career Guidance - discussions
