Qualifications Across Boundaries within LMI

It's all too easy to think of Labour Market Information only in relation to occupational structures and future trends. However, integral to understanding what is happening in the labour market is an appreciation of where and how educational qualifications fit in.

The Qualifications can cross boundaries website allows you to compare qualifications across the UK and Ireland. This is not the same as providing unlimited data on particular specialist occupational areas - you will need to build up other resources for that. However, this table provides information that allows you to look at the ways qualifications are organised in Ireland and the UK, which is important when advising employers and clients alike in an increasingly mobile labour market.

On one side of the table you will find the main stages of education or employment. The columns show the different national qualifications frameworks. You can then look at a level and/or qualification in one country and then see the nearest levels and similar kinds of qualifications that are used in the other countries. This makes it possible to draw broad comparisons between qualifications and their levels, rather than direct equivalences, for each country - hence it refers to being a 'rough guide'. Please see below for annotated screenshots.

Why you might use this resource:

If you are advising clients who are thinking of working or studying in Ireland or the UK - you may be interested to find out...

  • What do they call the nearest qualification to theirs?
  • Will they get some recognition for the qualifications they already have?
  • What kind of job or course could they apply for with their current qualification?

If you are advising an employer who is recruiting people from another country in Ireland and the UK? - you may be interested in the answer to these questions...

  • How do I know what a qualification from another country means in terms of level?
  • Which national qualification should I compare this qualification to?
  • Who do I go to for more detailed advice about the content and level of qualifications?
