Employment and Equal Opportunities Legislation – some useful websites
As a practitioner working with Labour Market Information you will know how important it is to keep up to date with relevant employment, education, training and equal opportunities legislation and develop the confidence to translate this knowledge into practice.
Can you:
- List with confidence the main legislation in relation to promotion of equality of opportunity?
- Challenge an opportunity provider in the event of misunderstandings, misinformation or misconceptions?
- Explain the practical implications of legislation to clients and organisations when appropriate?
- Signpost a client or employer who needs further support in relation to compliance with equal opportunities legislation?
One way to keep abreast of current and forthcoming legislation…
…is to get into the habit of monitoring relevant websites - make sure you visit them regularly, or subscribe to their RSS feed(s) if available. An obvious place to start is the Equality and Human Rights Commission, which from 1 October 2007, took on the role and functions of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) and the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), as well as having new responsibilities for sexual orientation, age, religion and belief, and human rights. Their website is located at http://www.equalityhumanrights.com
Don't forget to keep up to date with advocacy and campaigning organisations e.g. NACRO for ex offenders and The Employers Forum on Age. You can't know everything, but you should know who to signpost on to when appropriate.
