About the LMI Learning Modules
Aim in a nutshell: to provide opportunities to develop the ability to access, understand and manipulate Labour Market Information as part of effective career guidance
This section introduces the online module for LMI in practice, why it was developed, who helped, what it contains in terms of content and what the technology will allow users to do!
Careers guidance practitioners find themselves at the interface between the job market and their clients. In an increasingly complex world, it is perhaps unsurprising that one aspect of seeing a careers adviser that clients particularly value is the 'access to expert knowledge and networks' (Bimrose et al 2004:v). So whilst linking people to the labour market isn't the only goal of career guidance it is hard to imagine any credible attempt at guidance completely divorced from an understanding of Labour Market Information (LMI), and the ability to conjure from this raw and sometimes overwhelming data its more useful sister Labour Market Intelligence.
Careers Practitioners as 'Experts'
Job adverts for guidance practitioners are full of references to the ability to use LMI effectively as an essential requirement for the role. However, despite the importance of this activity, not all practitioners feel confident in this aspect of their work.
This module arises from the desire to develop an on-line tool that might guide those seeking to gain skills and confidence in this area of their work. LMI represents a huge but fascinating topic. This resource aims to provide a range of materials that will support anyone seeking to develop their skills in working with LMI. As such it is not a 'learning object' for the sake of it, but has been developed in response to a practical and identified need.
In the sections below you will find a summary of the content, an outline of the challenges in the development and acknowledgements to the practitioners involved in the formative evaluation stages of the project.
