KNDiscussion almost ready - 'real' discussions for PLone
KNDiscussion is almost ready to release as an installable Plone product. Early versions have been in use in some of our project sites without incident. We have since added a number of features, notably FastForums for very quick and transparent viewing and participation in threads, and a comprehensive configuration of moderation and permissions options.
KNDiscussion brings together the powerful content-management of Plone and the speed and transparancy of SQL to allow very efficient discussion participation but also allow all the convenience of Plone's content-management and permissions infrastructure. Discussions can be extremely lightweight: directly added to any folderish object without the need for a 'forum' container. They can also be used in more heavyweight contexts by adapting special container types and configuring the moderation and permissions options within it.
KNDiscussion also harnesses the power of weblogging standards: trackback is enabled, so that discussions can branch and connect with content in non-linear ways. RSS is very thoroughly and efficently implemented. And the weblogging APIs are exposed, so that we will shortly be able to allow members to post to discussions directly from 3rd party weblogging clients.
