Week 3 continued
Last thing yesterday, we were asked in turn what our telephone numbers were. Mine is
01 443 600 354
Then we tapped the rhythm of it out
So mine is xx xxx xxx xxx - apart from the beginning, I have 3 blocks of 3 numbers. Strangely, some people remembered theirs in groups of two - like how weird is that – mine would be 01 44 36 00 35 4 or even (0) 14 43 60 03 54.
So once everybody had given their numbers we then had to repeat out loud them using a different ‘rhythm’ – like I had to give mine in blocks of 2 digits. God! HOW HARD IS THAT!!!
J said how different people store things and retrieve things is different and there needs to be “Congruence between students storage and retrieval mechanisms and those of the teacher.”
Something to do with Schema – I think that’s a sort of template for storing things in your brain but I lost concentration at that point. Was trying to remember Lars phone number. Must watch the video about How we Remember Things.
Well what has all this got to do with students doing evaluation you may ask.

How students store and retrieve information will impact on the evaluation process – students will store their experiences of the course differently – not necessarily in the ‘categories’ that the teacher assumes.
This means teacher has to use variety of evaluation techniques to help them retrieve their experiences and feelings and maybe help reclassify them so they can be shared with others.

A quick and easy exercise. Just try it yourself. how do you remember telephone numbers? Now try asking some friends.
But what are the implications for teachers? Sarah says this means the teacher will have to use a variety of evaluation techniques to help learners retrieve their experiences and feelings - how feasible is this? What kind ot techniques could be used?
