Equal opportunities

Gender

Employment in the sector is predominantly female: two thirds of the workforce are women. This is expected to rise as over 80% (23,500) of the new jobs created by the voluntary sector between 1998-2000 were taken by women.

Ethnicity

5.6% of voluntary sector paid workers classify themselves as ethnic origin other than white.

41% of charities have no black volunteers.

Disability

The voluntary sector has a large proportion of paid workers (10%) who are disabled with a work-limiting disability. 61% of volunteer-involving organisations have volunteers with disabilities. 24% of the voluntary sector workforce has health problems lasting one year or more.

Age

The proportion of paid workers under 20 years of age is high at 2% (1.1% in the public and 6% in the private sector). 2.7% of paid workers are over 65 years of age (compared with 1.1% in the public sector and 2.2% in the private sector).
