Occupations

Information and trends on sectoral occupations.

Total requirements are positive for all occupational groups since replacement demands dominate small net changes in each occupational group.  Nearly 3 in 10 workers in this sector are classified as Machine and Transport Operatives reflecting the nature of much of the employment in this sector.

There are significant variations in industry recruitments needs throughout the sector.  Across the English regions there are difficulties recruiting people to engineering, maintenance and particularly driver occupations.  In the East of England, there is a shortage of managers.  In 2004, there was a significant increase in the number of driver/operatives needed.  In Northern Ireland, 33% of companies need professional and technical occupations, and 26% needed Plant and Machine operators.

Employment is projected to be fairly static over the next decade in this sector, but full-time jobs will be replaced by part-time employment.  Part-time employment is predicted to expand from 9% of employment to 14% over the next 10 years.  These trends are similar to those expected amongst employment covered by Skills for Logistics.

Around one third of all GoSkills workers are registered as self-employed, particularly in taxi and private hire.  Self employment will continue to be important in some parts of the industry.
