Light rail
There are eight light rail systems in the UK employing around 1,400 people. These systems are based in Nottingham, Manchester, Sheffield, Blackpool, Birmingham, Croydon, Tyne and Wear and London. This is one of the fastest growth areas in the public transport sector. Plans are underway to introduce new light rail systems in Leeds, London (West London and South/Central London), Bristol, Portsmouth, Liverpool and Edinburgh. Some specific job roles include:
- train drivers
- revenue protection
- track engineering
- vehicle maintenance (including electrical/engineering)
Although there are no industry specific qualifications, some operators use rail NVQs. New national occupational and associated NVQs will be available to the industry in 2007.
Customer service skills are also vital for the industry.
