The broadcast radio industry
There are 22,200 people working in broadcast radio, which is 7% of the audio visual industries. This is predicted to remain stable despite a 2% decline since 2004.
Work in radio is normally organised in small teams. Individuals are frequently involved in a production from concept through to broadcast. Within the industry permanent posts are the norm and only 23% of the workforce are freelancers.
Local stations provide work in most major towns and cities. Whilst many of the national radio stations are located in London, this is predicted to change in the future (such as the BBC's 5Live national news and sports station to Manchester). The BBC and Commercial Music stations dominate the industry.
