Future skill requirements and implications for the interactive media industry

The interactive media industry is expected to grow and change dramatically over the next 10 years.  A 30% growth is expected in 2005.  To meet these changes future skill requirements are needed:

A combination of specialist skills is needed to work in the industry including at least two of the following: design; technical; content; and business or management disciplines.

There is also a more general need for transferable skills and awareness of the wider industry and marketplace

Many new entrants lack ‘industry readiness’ and the right portfolio of qualifications, skills and aptitudes for the work environment which is creating problems in the industry.

Future employees in the industry will need to have a strong commitment to ongoing skills acquisition plus the development of leadership and management skills.  Individuals in the industry will need an understanding of both film script/narrative and game progression.

Technical skills of individuals will need to evolve and integrate their expertise with next generation console platforms and the associated high-level technical specifications.  Expertise will also be needed in website design, media integration, e-commerce, digital
security and anti-piracy technologies.

It is predicted that business skills and company development will range across managing:

  • the integration of traditional media and emerging technology;
  • company promotion
  • the exploitation of Internet Protocol
  • product development
  • brokering deals and the development of strategic partnerships
  • outsourcing
