Regional / national dimension

Information on regional trends and difference, together with trends in the home nations including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

The South East has the largest number of people, directly or indirectly employed in the logistics sector, with over a quarter of a million people.  The North West is the second largest English region employing over 200,000 people.  The East of England, West Midlands and Greater London all contribute to 12% of logistics employment.

Scotland accounts for the employment of 7% of the total, Wales 4% and Northern Ireland 1%.

English regions

In England there are approximately 56,000 workplaces, accounting for 3% of all workplaces.  There are 1.5 million in the English sector workforce accounting for 6.5% of all employment in England.  22% of the workforce are female and 7% are from minority ethnic groups.  There workforce has an older profile, particularly in the road freight industry.
