Yorkshire and the Humber
The Yorkshire and Humber region has a total IT workforce of 67,804 (ranked eighth by size) including:
- 26,276 employees in the IT industry
- 41,528 IT professionals working in other sectors
The region is predicted to see a modest growth in its share of UK IT employment between 2004 and 2014.
4% of IT professionals in the region are less than 100% proficient, compared to 3% in Great Britain as a whole. A high number of companies in the region reported skills gaps (11%). Similar to other English regions, skills gaps are reported in the development and implementation of IT systems and services. A low proportion of companies in the region reported IT vacancies (7%) compared to Britain (17%).
The most common IT professional job role in the region, in contrast to Great Britain as a whole, is ‘ICT Manager’. There are also high proportions of people employed as IT Operations technicians and Database Assistants. However, the occupational profile of the region is similar to other English regions.
The region has a very low number of further education IT professional qualification completions. QAA (Quality Assurance Agency) accredited courses in Computing and Computer Science are on offer at 13 Higher Education Institutions in the region. Yorkshire and the Humber attracted 7.4% of graduates, who entered the UK IT workforce within six months of graduation, to the region.
