The hairdressing and beauty industries are characterised by female full-time and part-time employees. Nevertheless, in the last 5 years an increase in male employment can be seen.

Age
The sector is characterised by a high proportion of young people which means most employees are to be found in the 15 to 34 age group. Young people training in the sector often experience financial difficulties which may affect their continuance on the training programmes, but the youth rate is effectively addressing this issue.
There are few opportunities for adult entrants to find employment in hairdressing.
