East Midlands
The East Midlands food and drink sector employs an estimated 46,000. The workforce increased by 4.6% between 1998-2001. There are an estimated 700 workplaces in the region, predominately in Lincolnshire and Rutland.
Vacancies are reported by 42% of employers in the region of which 56% reported vacancies for machine operatives. 23% of employers have hard-to-fill vacancies, resulting from a low number of applicants with required skills, a small number of applications and poor terms and conditions.
53% of the sector’s establishments report internal skill gaps, compared to the English sector average of 38%. Skills that need improving include: technical and practical; team working; problem solving; communication; and general IT skills.
