North East

There are 2,200 engineering manufacturing establishments employing 78,200 people in the North East – one of the smallest regions in the engineering sector.  Total employment in these establishments has fallen by 15% since 1998 and the largest decreases in employment have been in mechanical equipment and metal products sectors.  Increases are seen in the electronics and aerospace sectors.  In terms of total engineering employment in the region, the mechanical equipment (26%) and automotive (18%) sectors are the largest employers.
