Equal opportunities

Key information on equal opportunity issues specific to the sector.

Gender

Women currently account for about a quarter of all jobs, but this has been rising. Part-time employment is quite important, representing about 16% of all jobs.  Women are expected to increase their share of a static employment total, reaching over a third of the total by 2012.

Ethnicity

The proportion of ethnic minorities in the sector is relatively high with 4% Asian and 2.5% Black employees.

Age

Across the sector, there is a relatively young workforce. More than 35% of employees are younger than 34 years, more than 65% are younger than 44 years old.
