Fashion design

Skillfast-UK’s definition of the fashion design industry includes the following activities:
  • independent design businesses
  • independent design consultancies
  • haute couture establishments
  • small scale designer-makers (such as bridalwear makers)
  • designer brands

Independent designers and design brands make a significant contribution to the UK economy in terms of employment, turnover and export sales. It is estimated that 10,000 people are employed in designer fashion within 600 UK enterprises.

In 2001, the designer fashion industry generated sales turnover estimated to be worth £700 million which increases to £4 billion when sales of classic and contemporary brands are included. The industry has expanded as it had an average growth rate of 20% per annum between 1990-2001.

The industry is dominated by sole traders and partnerships. These self-employed individuals are typically designers who also take on a general business management role.

For most roles employers stress the importance of hands-on experience and expertise, sometimes as a supplement to formal accreditation. A qualification at degree or HND level is a common requirement for design roles. There is a reliance of many design businesses’ on word of mouth and personal recommendation when recruiting staff.

Key to the success of the industry is the need to address technical skills gaps in pattern cutting, CAD/CAM, garment construction, sample-making, market knowledge and commercial awareness.  Young people who want to go into the industry should select courses on the basis of their technical and work experience content.

Issues that will have an influence on the industry in the future include:

  • performance of global economy
  • rapidly changing and unpredictable consumer tastes
  • counterfeit products
  • low price competition from other brands
  • demise of UK manufacturing in specialist areas which affects capacity to support product development
  • reduced supply of individuals with technical skills and experience
  • difficulty of accessing overseas production
  • lack of business support for companies in intermediate stage of development
  • strength of sterling
  • challenge of managing retail network
