Regional / national dimension
Key statistics:
- London is home to 31% of the sector’s workforce. In contrast, the proportion of the UK’s total workforce located in London is only 14%.
- After London, the next largest regional proportion is 13% in the South East.
- The Northern regions generally show much lower numbers. Only the North West has a significant proportion of the total, with 9% of workers.
- The regional distribution of workers is similar across the sub-sectors, with London typically home to the largest proportion of workers, followed by South East.
- Cultural Heritage has the second largest proportion in Scotland, and Advertising has the second largest proportion is in the North West.
The key regional trend in relation to the creative and cultural sector is the concentration of the sub-sector in London and the South East. Growth is forecast in all regions, but with significant variations, and greatest growth still forecast for London and the South East.
Although there is a concentration of cultural and creative workers in London and the South East, the opportunities offered by the Internet and other new technology mean that, particularly for visual artists and musicians, geography is no longer such a barrier to career development.
There is very little variation in the skills needs of arts workers across the country.
