- One line bio: I am director of software here at KnowNet and one of its founders. My mission is to help create really compelling and powerful tools for sharing and building knowledge.

I'm originally from Nova Scotia, on the East Coast of Canada [ map ]. I've lived and worked in Edinburgh and Manchester, but I've spent most of the last 15 years in Bangor, Gwynedd [maps ].
I am a software architect / engineer / designer / dogs-body / director here at KnowNet. I've been in computer science since about 1980, so I guess this is my career, but I feel as if I'm only doing this for childcare/mortgage money, and that when I grow up I'll be a philosopher or writer, or maybe a carpenter :o) Before that I was a freight-handler for the CNR for 10 years, going to university as a mature student to study Math when the big layoffs of the late 70's hit the railroad. I'm married to the wonderful Hilda. Two of her children are still living at home: Jake and Florence. I have 5 great and talented kids of my own, mostly grown-up now, living in Canada and Scotland.

- FAQs / discussions by fine-grained row X column comparisons
- 02-February-2006 To me, the killer fature of an onlineversion would be to have links from 'deep' in the information / comparisons so that users could read fine-grained FAQs and participate in specific discussions.
- Qualifications can cross boundaries - the existing PDF leaflets
- 02-February-2006 This post begins the introduction of the work we are doing to create a dynamic, online version of the information presented in the leaflet(s) "Qualifications can cross boundaries - a rough guide to comparing qualifications in the UK and Ireland". I attach the PDF leaflets for Scotland, Ireland, and England, Wales & Northern Ireland. Subsequent posts will begin the explanation and presentation of options for "live" web interfaces.
- An example of filecasting - you can download the attached file direct from your feed reader
- 21-November-2005 This post demonstrates the merits of "filecasting" as a way of sharing files. If you add an attachment to a weblog post, it is made available in the RSS 2 feed for direct downloading from your feed reader. And since our discussions also support the 'editing APIs', you can also post and attach directly from a weblog editor. No-one need ever even visit the site!
