RSS News Feeds available for the site

Click for a plain-english introduction to news feeds There is a wide range of news feeds available to help you track the content and discussions in the NGRF site. Some of these are listed at the bottom of this page. A more extensive explanation of news feeds is available as a help topic in our weblogs, or at Feed 101.

Our main feed in brief

Subscribe to our main RSS news feed To keep up to date with our weblog posts and comments, combined with a daily digest of NGRF's social bookmarking, subscribe to our main RSS feed:

What are RSS News Feeds?

RSS News Feeds are a special, compact format for syndicating updates about content. They are not intended for displaying in web browsers, and will generally look broken if you try to look at them in a web browser like Internet Explorer. To use a News Feed link, you first need to have a 'News Reader' program installed on your own computer, or be registered at online News Aggregation services.

The advantage of news feeds is that they are very compact, so they load very quickly into the news reader programs. You can track many news feeds from one view in a news reader, allowing you to track many sources of content in one convenient and speedy interface. News readers also let you 'aggregate' - combine several feeds into one; this lets you create custom updates for tracking the content you want to know about.

If you have a news reader program, you can copy the URL for a news feed link and paste it into a new subscription in your news reader.

Many modern web browsers, such as Internet Explorer 7, Firefox, Flock and Safari, "know about" RSS news feed links, and let you simply click on RSS links to subscribe to them. Most will also "auto-detect" the main news feed for a site, and display an icon in the location bar which you can click on to subscribe.

How do I find the NGRF news feeds?

As noted just above, if you have a modern web browser, you will probably see an icon in the location bar for subscribing to a site's main feed (the location bar is where you type web locations). The NGRF does have a main newsfeed which will be auto-detected by modern browsers - there is a link to that newsfeed at the top of this page. But even if you have a web browser which auto-detects our main newsfeed, you may want to subscribe to other feeds available here (searches, tags, weblogs, etc…), in which case you'll have to notice and act on special links within the content.

Some of our news feeds are available through special links in the content itself. If you use an older web browser (such as Internet Explorer 6) you will get odd results if you click those links- remember: news feeds are in a special format that is not meant for web browsers. If you are using an older browser, you'll have to right-click the link for the feed you want to subscribe to and choose 'Copy Shortcut', 'Copy link to clipboard', etc ( the exact wording depends on your browser). This places the URL for the news feed on your clipboard for pasting into other programs.

For instance, all our weblogs have a 'Syndicate this weblog' sidebar (usually near the bottom of the left-hand side of the weblog pages). You can choose either to get updates about new weblog posts only, or to include new comments and discussion as well. There is also a choice between 'Atom' and 'RSS' news feeds; if you do not know what Atom is, we recommend you use the RSS feed. In the near future, we will be adding RSS links in our weblogs for tracking posts and discussions for particular categories or authors. These will be shown when you are viewing lists of posts for that category / author (by clicking in the categories or authors sidebars of the weblog).

Within the site content, some areas which have weblogs or discussion points nested within them will display a list of recent posts at the bottom of the page. In those cases there will also be an RSS link for a news feed giving recent discussion items or weblog entries from anywhere within that folder.

You may also see links for RSS feeds for single discussion items or blog entries; these feeds give updates on any further discussion 'within' the reply threads of that item. They can be useful if you want to track a particular thread, or perhaps use a news aggregator to combine a large number of feeds.

Some site content areas may also display an RSS link in the 'Tools' portlet at the left hand side of the content display; these feeds would give updates on new content added to that part of the site.

Some examples of useful fine-grained RSS feeds for the NGRF:

Remember: the links below are not meant for opening in web browsers. Right-click them and copy the link location / shortcut for subscribing in a news reading program or service. If you are not sure what these links are or, please read this help topic, or this introduction to feeds, first.

If in doubt, just try our main feed: NGRF Blogging, discussion and bookmarking (you can click this link in any browser). If you do not want to use an RSS reader, you can still .

Search results also display an RSS link; these feeds perform the search and return the results in RSS format so that you can check for new search results in a news reader.

Note that the links given for weblog / discussion RSS above are for the "RSS 2" full content with filecasts feeds. These provide the main content for the items returned, along with a special file enclosure link for items which have a file attachment ( you mnay have heard of these as 'podcast' enclosures because of their popularity as a way of distributing audio files). If you want to receive less data for each item - for instance for pulling summaries into another website - just replace "RSS_2.xml" with "RSS_1.xml" in the links above. "atom.xml" is also supported as a terse, summary format.
