A theoretical perspective on personal and career development interventions in France
Guichard (2004) offers three specific statements that can be used to underpin a theoretical framework to suport professional practice. Firstly, human beings interact in social contexts (structured, intricate and constantly evolving enivoronments) that provide them with social frames in which they construct themselves; secondly, every individual develops a system of 'cognitive identity' which allows him/her to develop different identity forms; and thirdly, the dynamics of self construction link directly to the fundamentals of reflexivity.
Two modes of reflexivity are examined within an academic context. Dual mirror reflexivity (understood as a fundamental desire for self-fulfilment) and the interaction between different personal viewpoints ('I', 'You' and 'S/he') within complex social inter-relationships. The concepts are both challenging and illuminating in terms of an alternative perspective from overseas. To what extent does this resonate with UK experiences? Are there other similar theoretical propositions that support or amend/ extend this proposition?
