Five core networking skills are described by Hastings. These can be summarised as:
- Crossing boundaries – awareness of boundaries and their implications. Self-awareness and ability to develop strategies to deal with political, psychological, mental, status, functional and historical boundaries.
- Exchange and reciprocity – understanding the process of co-operation and the need to ‘give and take’.
- Alliance-building and conflict management – initially a shared vision is needed. There may be conflict in differences of approaches, but building on commonalities should help in problem-solving.
- Communication skills – using both conventional and new methods, involving both verbal and written skills. Listening skills are equally important, together with technological skills in IT and possibly video-conferencing. Language skills for global communications.
- Personal management – ability to prioritise, manage stress and multi-roles; using emotional intelligence.
