Focus
In the Orange County (Florida) Public Schools, an evaluation was conducted of career education provided in elementary schools and secondary schools. A kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12) Career Education District Articlulation Plan provides objectives for every grade level. Ideally, career education is infused into the regular and special education curricula by K-12 teachers, occupational specialists in high schools, and guidance counselors at all levels. To evaluate the program, questionnaires were administered to approximately 100 teachers each at 75 elementary schools and at 10 middle schools, as well as to most of the guidance counselors. Structured interviews were conducted with 20 programme consultants and administrators, and high school occupation specialists completed a job analysis.
Findings
Evaluation reveals that career education continues to be a relevant program, and that a strong validation of purpose and scope is found in recent district documents. Career education lessons and activities may be most frequently found in elementary schools, with less emphasis in middle schools. In the high schools, occupational specialists need additional resources and space to provide services. There appears to be an overall need for staff development and familiarization with district objectives. Seven tables present study findings.
