Summary

The author puts the case for introducing careers education at an earlier stage and outlines the results of some recent evaluation studies in this field. The careers Programmes that are described in this article were introduced into schools in the West Midlands and the North West between 1988 and 1990. They were piloted with single sex and mixed sex classes, in schools, which were predominantly white, and in schools where pupils came from a wide range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Large city comprehensive schools and small rural schools were chosen to develop these programmes in order to obtain representative groups of pupils. The article is divided into three parts.

The first part puts forward the case for undertaking careers work with younger pupils, the second describes what the author believes to be the key essential ingredients to make this work successful, and the third outlines some of the evaluation studies that have been done to ascertain what impact this work has had on particular groups of pupils.
