The case for highlighting gender as an issue that continues to be pivotal in overcoming injustice is as strong as ever. Whilst men undoubtedly experience discrimination, it is women who continue to suffer most disadvantage on the basis of their gender.
50% of the population aged 16-64 are women, yet, average hourly earnings for women working full-time are 18% lower, and for women working part-time are 40% lower, than for men working full-time. These are just two indications that the gender divide in the UK still exists.
Theories that inform current practice in the UK were primarily formulated to explain the career development of men. Women's career development is, however, generally different from men. It is often more complex and is often characterised by different career stages or patterns.
