Morris, M., Nelson, J., Rickinson, M., and Stoney, S.M., with Benefield A. (1999) A literature review of young people’s attitudes towards education, employment and training. London: Department for Education and Employment.Editorial Comment:
Focus of study
Documents, most of which were published after 1993, are reviewed and the resultant report includes some coverage of the role of guidance in influencing young people’s attitudes.
Key findings
The research suggests that some young people lack sufficient knowledge about content and workload of courses, and that students withdraw from further education courses mainly because of concerns about course content and timing, teaching quality and social relationships. Access to good quality careers guidance was one of the key factors in raising levels of awareness and positive attitudes towards vocational training.
Additional comments
The quality of guidance is emphasised.
