10) The business case for me...

The business case for me is always characterised by a scenario where there are winners and losers, whatever the context. I don't have a problem with this providing that someone or somebody is taking a long-term view and is willing to manage the otherwise unfettered market and is also willing to run some educational loss leaders, subsidised if necessary by more lucrative options. Perhaps there is therefore another role in this case for the guidance professional as the honest broker with the long-term view and the ability to protect /defend options for the client- stopping in the worst case scenario the unfettered market outcomes. An example might be helpful; What I'm talking about is in the world of education a scenario where there are no Biology A level options because there is a view, people prefer to do Human Biology because they don't like plants and because Human Biology courses recruit more easily the providers don't run Biology courses. All providers follow this course of action, so we lose choice and clients lose future options or will face restricted choices. This doesn't make long-term business sense for the economy but it's a quick fix response to financial insecurity experienced by a provider.
